Four gendarmes charged with homicide in Jujuy

Four gendarmes are charged with preventive detention for the homicide of motorcyclist Ivo Rodrigo Torres in the province of Jujuy. The victim was shot by the officers during a procedure in La Quiaca when he attempted to enter Argentine territory from Bolivia through an illegal crossing with a small amount of coca leaves. A sergeant, a sub-lieutenant, and two corporals from Squadron 21 of the National Gendarmerie have been accused of double aggravated homicide due to treachery and abuse of power as members of a security force. Federal Judge No. 2, Carina Gregoraschuk, ordered preventive detention for four months for the accused: sub-lieutenant Alexander Gunther, sergeant Walter Daniel Álvarez, and corporals Juliana Carina Enciso and Marcos Wisniewski. 'Of the four, Álvarez is the most implicated, as he is identified as the presumed material author of the fatal shots,' stated the press release from the Public Prosecutor's Office. The crime of Ivo Rodrigo Torres, 22 years old, occurred on February 6 at the border limit of La Quiaca. The gendarmes, stationed as a patrol, saw Torres entering from Bolivia and apparently ignoring the order to stop. After initiating a chase and firing warning shots into the air, the motorcyclist was injured and died in the Praderas del Norte neighborhood. After unsuccessful attempts at resuscitation by the Emergency Service, packages of coca leaves were found in Torres's clothing. Authorities conducted corresponding investigations and expert assessments, confirming that the young man's death was caused by two shots fired by the gendarmes, one to the back and the other to a leg. At the formalization hearing, the prosecution requested preventive detention for the four gendarmes, arguing the seriousness of the incident, the risk of flight and obstruction, as well as the penalty scale of the crime.
